If you’ve been involved in any component of the Richmond music scene, Strange Matter has always been an epicenter for the music culture in the Gritty City. Back on November 10th, 2018, Strange Matter announced on their Instagram page (@strangematterrva) that they’re shutting down on December 15th. Strange Matter is currently the third longest running incarnation at that building only behind the Back Door and Twister incarnations. The legendary Strange Matter incarnation hosted bands like Blind Justice and Outsider at a recent rock event. It was the home of Black Liq’s Facemelt Friday event. It hosted the Legends Never Die 3 and Legends Never Die 4 battle rap events that featured stars from the Smack URL, Southpaw Battle Coalition, and 3BLOC rosters. It hosted birthdays and had some of the best vegan junk food that you could find in Richmond. It also had the friendliest staff around that would check on you as you’re sipping on a drink enjoying the festivities avoiding the mosh pit.

Now, Gabriel Lopez, the staff from the Vinyl Conflict record shop located on 324 South Pine Street in Richmond, and Harry Pinnix has started a GoFundMe to raise money to keep the establishment that has helped many bands and artists from all over. Here’s more information about what would be done with the money below from the GoFundMe description itself:

“Your donations would go on top of a potential business loan that would provide us the necessary funds to let all this happen, but the more we get in donations, the more likely it is for us to get our necessary loan, as we could ask for less. We know it seems like a lot, but our goal is only a portion of the projected funds we would need. Of course, if it goes beyond the goal, that's even better!

For complete transparency, its important that we let you know that we will most likely not be using the name Strange Matter. We feel like Strange Matter will always be remembered how it was, and we don't want to come in and take away from that. That doesn't mean we're going to completely change it, either!

We fully intend to keep running our shows the same way they always have been at 929 W. Grace. Band people, that means we will
never do pay to play. You're the lifeblood.  Let us take care of you.

So please. Help us. Lets keep 929 W. Grace in our community. We love it.

DISCLAIMER: Any funds donated will not be used or withdrawn until a deal goes through and is finalized. Any unused funds will be returned to the contributor.”
